The third birthday event, unlike the previous two, whose rewards were obtainable via simply visiting the event area, involved performing a set of tasks to receive this year's reward, which is searching for the gnome child's lost hat.
Walkthrough[]
Speak to the gnome child in the front of Lumbridge Castle and learn that he has lost his hat. Next, speak to Hans, who is found walking around Lumbridge Castle. He will state that he saw a seagull carry away the green hat, but could not advise of the direction in which the seagull flew.
Travel to Port Sarim and speak to Captain Tobias, Seaman Lorris, or Seaman Thresnor. The player would be told they saw a man in white armour wearing the hat being described. Head to Falador Park and speak to Sir Tiffy Cashien to receive a present intended for his grandson, Ebel Lum.
Return to the gnome child, who has by this time already found his hat. He engages in a dialogue reminiscent of Schrödinger's cat: The hat is both inside the box and not in the box, until it is opened and observed. Open the present which contains a gnome child hat. If players did not obtain the birthday event items from previous years (a war ship and cow outfit), they will receive it along with the hat.
Although unnecessary, players can return to Sir Tiffy to find out that his grandson also received the hat and is happy.
