|It's a monkey in your backpack. As you look it pokes you.|
The Monkey is obtained during the Monkey Madness I quest. During the quest, the player is tasked with saving a monkey from the Ardougne Zoo in order to earn the trust of Awowogei. Players obtain a monkey by wielding a Karamja monkey greegree, then talking to the Monkey Minder to be put into the cage with the other monkeys. Afterward, they must talk to a monkey with their M'speak amulet and convince it to get into their backpack. To get out of the cage, players must unwield the greegree and speak with the Monkey Minder who will remove you from the cage. Players cannot teleport with the Monkey in their inventory, and it cannot be banked. Using any form of teleportation will make the monkey disappear from your backpack.
Dropping the Monkey will cause it to leave your pack and wander around for a bit, although it will disappear after about 30 seconds. It can be picked up again by talking to it. If the monkey is dropped on the island of Karamja however, it will turn into a ordinary Monkey and exclaim "Yay! I'm free!", rewarding you with 184 Thieving Experience.
While in your backpack, the monkey can be poked, much to its annoyance, and it will often interrupt you. It can be fed Bananas, Monkey nuts, Monkey bars and Banana stew by using him on them, although he will claim to not want the latter items, despite eating them anyway. He will also randomly eat any banana's in your inventory even if you don't use him on them.
At any point during or after the quest, the monkey has a rare chance of spitting out a medium clue scroll if you directly feed it a banana, although this only works once. This will display the message "The monkey chews on the banana and spits out a clue!" in the chatbox. To obtain the clue scroll you must not have another medium difficulty clue scroll in your inventory nor bank; however, another difficulty clue scroll won't interfere. Do not skip the dialogue when you feed the monkey, as it will not count as an attempt towards the clue scroll.
- It was previously possible to drop/release the monkey in a Free to Play world, this has now been fixed by Jagex.
- When interrupting you, it will say "Are we there yet?", "I'm tired." and occasionally has nightmares about The Shaikahan.
