This article is about the status. For the item, see Skull (item).
Skull (status) icon

The skull is a status effect in RuneScape. The skull appears for players attacking another in the Wilderness, or if they enter the Abyss and they do not have an abyssal bracelet equipped. Players can also get a skull without having to use either method by asking the Emblem Trader to skull them. When skulled, you will lose all items upon death, unless the Protect Item prayer is used, in which case you will keep your most valuable item upon death.

Players who are attacked by another player in the Wilderness can safely retaliate without getting skulled themselves. Just make sure you are retaliating against the same player that attacked you and not someone who did not or a player that only seems like they are attacking you. Do not attack a player on sight that has skulled on you before because they might have logged out meaning when you attack "back", you will get a skull. Be extra cautious when player killer's name is obscure because they might have a partner with a very similar name and if you "retaliate" against them you will get a skull. Always, before retaliating, check the name and don't attack only by using visual cues.

Innocent players entering the Wilderness should be careful for "skull trickers". Skull trickers will attempt to skull you through deception, aggravating and by exploiting in-game mechanics. Skull tricking is a common practice since most players entering the Wilderness are usually there to kill monsters or collect resources and not to PK.

Note: In multi-way areas, you can unintentionally skull yourself with AoE attacks (e.g. burst/barrage spells, chinchompas) if you use it against the aggressor and there are other players that haven't attacked you first next or on them.

The "skull" will disappear automatically after 10/20 minutes depending on how the player got it; it disappears after 10 minutes after using the Abyss, and 20 after attacking a player. If you re-enter the Abyss or attack another player that has not attacked you yet, the skull timer will reset.

If a player needs to quickly remove their skull, they can either go to monster(s), which will kill them very quickly (such as the Corporeal Beast) or a player can enter the free-for-all portal at Clan Wars and then leave.
